Husam stays out of fight for PAS No 1
It will be a straight fight between incumbent Abdul Hadi Awang and Ahmad Awang for the PAS presidency come June.
The third and final nominee for the post, Husam Musa, has chosen to stay out of the presidential race and instead defend his position as vice-president.
Husam secured enough nominations to contest the top three positions in the party.
Husam is the first person to have stated his intention to vie for vice-presidency thus far. The other two incumbents are Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Salahuddin Ayub.
Tuan Ibrahim ( left ) has confirmed that he will be vying for deputy presidency . He will be facing incumbent Mohamad Sabu.
In a press statement released today, Husam expressed gratitude to all PAS divisions that nominated him.
"I understand their wishes, especially in charting PAS' Islamic struggle in the Malaysian context for the decades to come," he said.
The pursuit of inclusiveness
Husam said he was of the opinion that PAS must be led by the ulama class and that the party's successes today were the result of an approach based on Article 5 of the PAS constitution, which outlines the party's Islamic approach.
However, he said, PAS's "roadmap to Putrajaya" and its "PAS for all" approach towards non-Muslims was a decision made collectively by the party and not decided by any one individual.
"If this goal is thought to be unislamic, we have to make a new decision. (For now,) no one can put aside this decision that we have made.
"Islamic politic goes beyond racial lines and (we have) expanded (our reach) beyond those who are traditionally our supporters, which has contributed to our success in our long-term plan to spread our religion.
"This success is based on what we have decided on in the past," Husam said, while warning that PAS must not be misled by lies propagated by its opponents.
