Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali wants not only ministers but civil servants as well to be investigated by the authorities for having wealth beyond their means.

He was responding to a blog post by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad who called for the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) to investigate the wealth of ministers, that has led Malaysia to be in the top ten list of most corrupt countries.

"I agree with Mahathir. I support his call. I have asked the same question a long time ago of not only ministers but civil servants as well.

"Look at the former civil servants who retired as chief secretaries or director-generals. If you calculate  their salary after working for 30 years and even if they fasted the entire time, can they afford the wealth they have now?" posed Ibrahim at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Meanwhile Ibrahim said he did not believe that the Parliamentary Account Committee (PAC) could solve the problems of 1MDB as it lacks the power and will to do so.

 

The former Pasir Mas MP said based on experience he had as a PAC member, the committee were obstructed by their limited scope in making a thorough probe of the debt ridden company.

 

"That is why Perkasa, the first NGO to talk about 1MDB, called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI). Settled. Because the investigation will be thorough if the RCI were involved.

 

"Now everyone wants to talk and point fingers, saying the cabinet should be responsible. But the audit report (For 1MDB) is not out yet so the matter won’t be resolved.”

 

On April 14, Perkasa had suggested former Chief Justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad, who now leads the National Unity Front (NUF), consisting of Malay NGOs including Perkasa, to head its proposed RCI.
