Quit first to see if Penang falls, PAS dared

Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik today rubbished PAS' claims that the Penang government cannot stand without the Islamic party's support, telling its representatives to quit to prove it.

"PAS members in Penang should be instructed to quit their positions in the Penang government (to see) if indeed a DAP-PKR state government will fall without the support of PAS members," said Ng, who is also Penang DAP Youth chief.

He was responding to Kuala Terengganu PAS information chief Ahmad Amzad Hashim who challenged the Penang government to dissolve the state assembly and hold a re-election.

"DAP, don't be arrogant. If DAP really wants to know its strength without PAS, then try and dissolve the Penang state assembly now.

"Dissolve the House now and see how many positions DAP can maintain in the new government," he said.

Ng criticised Ahmad for the tough talk but at the same time urging PAS members to cling on to their positions.

"I would like to ask Ahmad, why are PAS members being prevented from resigning if he indeed wants the Penang government to fall, supposedly that it cannot stand without PAS members’ support?

"Where is the party's self-respect?" he said.

PAS has only won one seat

Ng said despite PAS' boasting, the party has only won one state seat in Penang since 1999.

"On March 8, 2008, DAP won 19 seats and PKR won nine, thus forming a DAP and PKR government without the need of PAS.

"On May 5, 2013, DAP maintained its 19 seats and PKR increased its seats to 10, bringing the combined seats to 29.

"We DAP do not want to be arrogant or proud, we are merely stating facts and figures," he said.

Ng added going by PAS' argument, it should likewise resign in Selangor and prove if it can regain support in a fresh state election.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had asked PAS representatives to resign from some 1,000 appointments in the state government after the party approved a motion last week to sever ties with DAP.

The motion was passed after pro-Pakatan Rakyat leaders in PAS were purged in the party election last week and taken over by conservative hardliners.

However, the new PAS leadership later said the motion was not final even though it was approved by the party's highest decision making body, the muktamar, and urged PAS members not to quit their government posts.

This is after several pro-Pakatan leaders, resigned their posts, stating that it was in compliance with the motion pushed by the new PAS leadership.
