The Dewan Rakyat speaker should have acted against Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin for making "death threats" on Wednesday.

This was the sentiment shared by several lawyers when asked to comment on Bung Moktar's tirade in Parliament over a protest in front of his house.

Bung said that his family were harassed by the protesters and they were lucky he wasn't home at the time, or else "people may have died".

He even challenged the protesters to do it again, adding, "We'll see who lives".

Lawyer New Sin Yew said although Article 63(2) of the federal constitution gives MPs legal immunity during parliamentary sessions, Bung had used "unparliamentary language" worthy of reprimand.

Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) co-founder Eric Paulsen said many opposition MPs have been censured and suspended from duty for far less than what Bung has done.

What reform, Pandikar?

One example was the six-month suspension of Padang Serai MP N Surendran in 2013, for accusing the speaker of showing double standards.

"In this case (Bung Moktar's), the speaker seems to have closed one eye," he said.

PKR legal bureau chief Latheefa Koya said she could not understand how anyone can be granted immunity for making death threats.

Latheefa said it was clear bias on the part of speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia, who was presiding at the time.

By letting Bung off the hook, Pandikar's earlier claim that he seeks parliamentary reforms rings hollow, said Latheefa.

"I don't know what he's talking about when he said (he desires) parliamentary reform, when he's still letting things like this happen," she said.
