The Malaysian student jailed in London  for possessing child pornography, Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, has been given the green light to be extradited to Malaysia, Mara chairperson Annuar Musa confirmed today.

Nevertheless, Annuar said, there were several processes that first needed to be undertaken first before the extradition is made possible.

"His (Nur Fitri's) parents have pleaded with us to help in the extradition process. The process needs certain input from the Malaysian High Commission first," he said.

"As it is related to our foreign mission, I have asked the deputy foreign minister (Hamzah Zainudin) to look into this case, so that the extradition process can be done," Annuar ( photo ) told reporters at the Mara headquarters today.

Nur Fitri is currently serving a nine-month jail sentence in the United Kingdom. The 23-year-old was studying on a Mara scholarship at Imperial College London when he was arrested.

Meanwhile, Annuar stressed that they could not be involved the matter beyond the existing laws.

"We go by the book as far as the law is concerned.

"We are helping based on humanitarian values as he was a student under Mara. We cannot just abandon him like that," he said.

A 'wrong signal' was given in May

Asked whether Nur Fitri would continue his studies at a local institution in Malaysia, Annuar said that depended on Nur Fitri himself.

"After he serves his sentence and once he is back in the country, that is between him and his family."

Annuar admitted that a "wrong signal" had been given back in May, as though Mara supported Nur Fitri to continue his studies in Malaysia.

"Mara did not make a decision. It was just a personal opinion of one of our council members for Nur Fitri to be placed in any Mara institution," he said.

Mara councillor Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin's comment that everyone should be given second chances had caused an outcry.

Nazir later said his remarks were taken out of context and he was not speaking in his capacity as a Mara councillor.
