Pua laments 'evil scheme' to burn out PAC
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) may be hard at work probing alleged government wrongdoings but the fact the committee has to deal with a growing mountain of cases shows something is very wrong with the country, says Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua.
"I'm not complaining that I've got a hardworking PAC chairperson (Nur Jazlan Mohamed) calling up dodgy government agencies.
"But the number of multi-million contracts we have had to investigate is getting absolutely ridiculous," he said in a Facebook posting last night.
Pua, who is a member of the PAC, added in jest that there appeared to be a conspiracy to overwhelm the committee members.
"What type of cocked-up government do we have giving the PAC so much work?
"Is this some evil scheme of unknown intent to overburden the PAC members so that they burn out?" he asked.
Alleged property scam in Australia
Pua was referring to the announcement by Nur Jazlan yesterday that the PAC will probe an alleged property scam in Australia involving Mara.
The Australian press had alleged that Mara purchased an apartment block in Melbourne at an inflated price in exchange for kickbacks.
This came just hours after Nur Jazlan said the PAC will also question 1MDB executives on allegations made by Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that the company's funds were used to finance the ruling coalition's general elections campaign.
He said that this is before the PAC decides whether it should call other parties implicated in the case including Genting Group and Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M).
1MDB executives are scheduled to testify before the PAC in August over the status of its massive RM41.8 billion debt, including its the company's investment parked in Singapore which value is said to be worth US$1.103 billion (RM4.14 billion) but cannot be verified.
