Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had never planned on attending any event in Parliament today, according to his aide.

This was in response to several police reports lodged by NGOs yesterday, aimed at preventing Mahathir from attending.

"It baffles me too. We never had any plans of going," said an aide.

Among those to have lodged a report was Persatuan Anak Muda Pulau Pinang (PAMPP) who claimed that Mahathir was supposed to attend a function in Parliament.

PAMPP said police must prevent Mahathir from attending the function to prevent a recurrence of chaos seen during the "Nothing2Hide" dialogue with NGOs on June 5.

The "Nothing2Hide" dialogue was supposed to be between Najib and NGOs on the 1MDB controversy. Mahathir was among those present.

Najib decided to give the event a miss at the eleventh hour. This prompted Mahathir to enter the venue and was invited to address the crowd. The police eventually cut him off 10 minutes into the speech.

Later, the police claimed that they had instructed Najib to stay away due to security concerns.

The function in Parliament today was a bipartisan meeting of lawmakers and NGOs on the 1MDB controversy and a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report alleging that nearly US$700 million was transferred into Najib's personal account.

According to the report, the funds originated from 1MDB-linked companies. Najib has denied any wrongdoing.
