Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad said PAS should call for a central committee meeting to decide the fate of party's progressive faction for joining Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB).

"The leaders have given different opinions and comments. There is no point (for us to respond to every one of them).

"I asked them to call for a central committee meeting and come out with an official stand," he said when met at a Hari Raya open house event at Parliament today.

He was asked to respond to the statement by PAS youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz who said that PAS' elected representatives are tied to Bai'ah (religious oath) if they quit the party.

Khalid however said the oath which was pledged in 2008 involved "divorcing their spouses", but it was not renewed before the 2013 general elections.

"It was the party which violated Bai'ah , not us," he said, adding that PAS has derailed from its cause for Islamic struggle.

Divorce wife rule

After the 2008 general election during which the opposition coalition was plagued by defections, it is said that some PAS representatives had made a religious oath where they would have to quit as elected representatives if they were sacked from PAS.

The religious oath also stipulates they would have to divorce their wives if they willingly quit the party or defected to another party.

Gerakan Harapan Baru ( photo ) which is tipped to replace PAS in the revamped Pakatan Rakyat, will be formalised by Sept 14.

Its first annual general meeting will be help in Kuala Lumpur. The new entity is led by former PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
