Umno needs to rewrite ‘political donation’ script

YOURSAY ‘The more they spin, the more they get caught in the web.’

'US$650m from Najib's account sent abroad'

Ferdtan: This is Political Strategy 101. We are sure more will be exposed in due time. It is a case of giving the suspect enough rope to hang himself.

US$681 million came into Malaysia, US$650 million apparently transferred to Singapore a few months later.

This is an obvious money laundering offence; the money came in on pretense of political donation, spent some of it for Umno in the general election, and then sent the balance, a lot of it, back overseas.

Where to and to whom? That is a two billion ringgit question.

JusticeNow!: Just when they thought the ‘political donation’ script was working, the carpet has been pulled from under their feet.

Now let's see how they modify the script.

ResIpsa: To a certain extent, Sarawak Report has adopted a tactical move in not releasing all the information in one go.

Now the PM has his work cut out. Did the money really leave the country and if so, what happens to the political donation storyline now?

Bluemountains: US$650 million went back to the "donor"? Did the Umno supreme council authorised the return of the donation?

Were top Umno leaders Muhyiddin Yassin and Shafie Apdal aware of the transaction which took place on Aug 30, 2013 while they were still members of the supreme council?

The more they spin, the more they get caught in the web.

Pemerhati: Sarawak Report also says, “Many of the recipients are proving themselves to be some of Najib’s strongest defenders in the present crisis.

“They include the Umno Back Bench chairman Shahrir Abdul Samad, who received RM1 million after the election and the Deputy Finance Minister Ahman Maslan, who got a cheque for RM2 million.”

Najib was throwing comparatively small change such as one or two million to key Umno leaders to garner their support and remain in power.

With the revelations by Sarawak Report that different Umno people have been given different amounts and some may not have received anything, it would be interesting to see how the Umno people who did not receive anything and those who comparatively received very little, will react.

One thing that can be said is that all those who have received money quietly from Najib have had their reputation very badly tarnished.

Onyourtoes: Can we have the details please, like exactly who among Malaysian ministers, MPs, and other officials who have received money from this account?

The hypothesis is simple: the degree of support to this regime is proportionate to the amount each supporter received.  The higher one received, the greater and more vehement the support is likely to be.

So step one is for us to find out who get what and how much from the regime. Once exposed, these supporters will lose their aura and credibility, as simple as that.

Right now, they can say they are supporting the regime because they love their leaders, Umno and Malaysia.  Once exposed, I think we can all safely say they love money and positions more.

Unspin: Although it is difficult to make sense of a ‘political party donation’ being managed by just one individual without the knowledge of the rest of the party members, please allow me to offer a hypothesis that will tie it all together.

The hypothesis is called the ‘scotch-earth strategy’. Remember that during the last election in 2013, it was quite unpredictable whether BN or Pakatan Rakyat will form the next government.

As insurance, the person brought in about US$1 billion into his personal account. After he received the money, he proceeded to give a fraction of that amount to his grassroots to buy the election. Regardless of which party won the election, he would transfer the money out to secure his family’s financial future.

The “donation” was just an alibi that was planned from Day 1 because he wanted it to “appear” that he was helping the party. Otherwise, why would a person be so stupid as to put a political “donation” into his personal account locally instead of leaving it offshore?

Odin Tajué: Najib, the US$681 million transferred from BVI/Singapore into your personal bank accounts with AmBank was never a political donation. We out here all know that.

The activities of 1MDB, SRC International and other companies under you are nothing more than elaborate scams.

The convenient ‘disappearance' of Jho Low, Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, Suboh Mohd Yassin, Casey Tang Keng Chee, and Jasmine Loo Ai Swan, and the disbanding of the special task force, the obvious sabotage of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), and the oppression of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) clearly point to the fact that you do not want the scams to be investigated.

Jesse: Why no legal action either in Malaysia or Singapore for money laundering on such a scale?

Turvy: It is a sign of gross stupidity for anyone to bring into their house anything so large as an elephant and keep it a secret, especially after the creature dies.

Our PM and his champions are doing just that - braving through the stink denying the smell and the carcass rotting in their office.
