The Federal Court has fixed another case management date, next Wednesday (Aug 26), for Anwar Ibrahim’s review application which was filed in a bid to set aside his sodomy conviction and five years’ jail sentence.
Federal Court deputy registrar Izuddin Mohamad fixed the new date after the matter came up before him for case management today.
Anwar’s lawyer Latheefa Koya, who attended the proceeding today, said another case management date has been fixed to enable the court to confirm the hearing date.
She said both the defence and prosecution were able to get a common hearing date but it may not be suitable to the court.
Anwar’s other lawyer, N Surendran, was also present during the proceedings.
Deputy public prosecutor Nadia Mohd Izhar appeared for the prosecution.
Anwar, 67, is currently serving a five-year jail term in the Sungai Buloh Prison after the Federal Court on Feb 10, this year upheld his conviction and jail sentence for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 30.
He was alleged to have committed the offence at Unit 11-5-1 of Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara here between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
Anwar subsequently filed the review bid on April 30 this year seeking the Federal Court to invoke Rule 137 of the Rules of the Federal Court 1995 to review the decision of the Federal Court five-member panel which was led by Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria.
Alternatively, he wants the Federal Court to re-hear his appeal on its merits.
