So Dr M wants opposition’s help to save Umno

YOURSAY ‘What rubbish is this? He wants the opposition to save Umno?’

Dr M's formula - Najib out, BN stays

RKR: Former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad is trying to use opposition to get rid of Najib but not BN. This is to ensure opposition doesn't get into power and dig out all the past shenanigans.

The opposition must find a way to use Mahathir and get rid of both Najib and BN. They should agree with Mahathir to get Najib out and demand Ku Li to be appointed as PM.

Oh Ya?: What rubbish is this? He wanted to the opposition to save Umno, whose 57 years of mismanagement, scandals and plundering the state coffers to enrich themselves in the name of NEP (New Economic Policy) are the causes today's problems.

If the opposition should bite the bait it only goes to show that they are no better than Umno and should be dumped in future elections.

Umno, and not only Najib, has to go and all the Umnoputras who have sinned must be jailed and their ill-gotten wealth confiscated and returned to the people. Period.

Hamzah Paiman: The deal should be accepted on condition a PM acceptable to the majority and the independence of all the national institutions be restored so that no dictator can ever hijack it again in the future.

Anonymous 2121671439899126: Mahathir, the reason your successors are such weaklings is because that's the sort of people (I won't call them 'men') that you accumulated around you - indecisive sycophants who wouldn't dare challenge your inflated opinion of yourself.

Anonymous Kingfisher: Mahathir, you were the founder and creator of the system. You have selected Najib as your successor and he has now turn around and bite you really bad using your system.

We support the call for Najib to step down, but more so the cleansing of the Election Commission, restoring equitable representation, and immediately having clean and fair elections so that the people can decide who to govern the country.

TheAnonymous: Frankly speaking, I hate the idea but it's feasible. GE14 is still couple of years to go and anything can happen. I think the opposition should mull over it and come up with terms that can work both ways.

Hbasill: I have a different take. BN must stay but all corrupt BN politicians, especially the crooks who have carried out or participated in the cleansing of those who were against Najib, be removed together with Najib.

The opposition should battle fairly at GE14 and win the general election as there is ample ammunition against the government. As of now, the country and people are suffering. A change of leadership is necessary.

Dr M is right, it is very difficult to oust BN through a vote of no coincidence against Najib. A pact has to be made between the opposition and the Muhyiddin Yassin-led faction to take Najib out.

Prudent: No deal. Najib and BN must give way to a caretaker unity government. Otherwise if another leader from Umno takes over, even worse scandals can happen and the opposition may also have to share the blame for them in GE14.

At the same time I suspect that Mahathir already has the plans in place to push out Najib decisively. It's not like him to talk speculatively and make an offer to the opposition based on a hypothetical assumption.

The bogey about the demise of parliamentary democracy is just a bogey. We look to the Perak precedent being re-enacted on the national stage.

Bender: This plan might have a greater chance of success if the opposition is united. Sadly, even amongst the opposition themselves, there are many opportunists who would gladly sell their soul in return for some share from Najib's stash. That's the power of money.

Even the plan by the old man is not entirely sincere. Knowing Mahathir, it’s quite clear that he's eyeing the top post for his own cronies.

If he's truly sincere, why not call for a complete overhaul? Why not hand over the country to the opposition and let democracy takes its course?

After all, he indicated that the rot in Umno is so severe that the whole organisation can be bought at will even by the mentally-challenged Najib.

Changing the rotten head can make a difference if the body is still fine, but it’s obvious that even the body is also rotten. There's no more hope for Umno.

Anticonmen: '"Najib's lack of respect for the law and constitution and his willingness to buy off politicians and civil servants may mean the end of parliamentary democracy in Malaysia,” said Mahathir.

“It can mean no opposition just like as in Umno where opposition to him has been snuffed out.”

Mahathir, this is exactly what you did. Parliamentary democracy, in fact, ended under your watch.

Anonymous 2184981434971950: At least embattled Najib is right about one thing. The current mess in Malaysian politics is the making of his greatest nemesis, Mahathir, who led the Southeast Asian nation with an iron fist from 1981 to 2003.

What Najib fails to fathom is that Mahathir has not produced this mess by criticising his leadership, but by paving Najib’s path to power in the fashion he did during his decades in office.

Mahathir may believe that he can end the crisis by bringing Najib down. But history should judge Mahathir as the author of a long national decline that has culminated in this latest crisis.

Gggg: There is nothing new in the proposal here. DAP leader Lim Kit Siang has already suggested that but there is always a risk of the new man with the help of PAS would put opposition in a weaker position in the next election.

The only way DAP and PKR should agree to this is if the new leader would ensure fair and an independent judiciary and EC established.

SusahKes: The desperado wants to negotiate with the opposition now? And yet, he still wants them to kowtow to Umno-BN?

So, does that mean former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim must still remain inside the slammer? You never cease to amaze the world Mahathir, with your logic.

Hank Marvin: The problem is Umno-BN and Najib is just part of it. To save the country we must remove Umno-BN.

Otherwise we will just treating the symptom. They, including Mahathir, must be removed.
