PM urged to 'exorcise demon' at Bersih 4 rally

DAP has urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to make an appearance at the Bersih 4 rally, saying that this could be an opportunity for him to explain himself and the RM2.6 billion deposited into his personal bank account.

“There is no better occasion to confront this demon in Najib's premiership than for him to come clean and undergo an exorcism through a frank and no-holds-barred dialogue with Bersih 4 organisers and principal supporters on the state of democracy more than six years as the sixth prime minister of Malaysia,” said its parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang.

In a statement today, he said the scandal over the supposed political donation can only grow larger and would eventually eclipse the 1MDB scandal, and Najib ( photo ) risks being ‘drowned’ in the two scandals unless it is nipped in the bud.

By holding a dialogue with Bersih 4 organisers, Lim said it would be a ‘historic occasion’ for Najib where he could achieve what he had failed to do in the past two months.

These include disclosing the source of the funding deposited on March 2013 and where the money has gone to, who are the beneficiaries and how much they were paid, what is left of the fund and where is it kept.

'Full security and courtesy'

“The prime minister can be assured of full security and courtesy, as the police, Bersih 4 organisers and principal supporters, will ensure that the prime minister is not only safe but accorded full courtesy and politeness which Malaysians show their leaders and officials,” Lim added.

The Bersih 4 rally is to be held on the coming weekend around Dataran Merdeka, and is slated to run 34 straight hours starting on Aug 29 at 2pm.

The Kuala Lumpur police have claimed that Bersih’s steering committee has not submitted the necessary paperwork to the police, while Bersih claimed that the papers have been submitted but the police have refused to even acknowledge its receipt.

Lawyers such as Shahredzan Johan had pointed out a non-notification of a rally to the police does not make a rally illegal, and clamping down on a rally for this reason is unconstitutional.
