‘Find not just Morais’ murderer, but Beng Hock’s, too’
The Attorney-General’s Chambers’ call for a thorough probe into the murder or officer Anthony Kevin Morais was timely, said Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching.
However, the same determination should also apply to other cases such as the death of DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock.
“I cannot agree with AG’s Chambers more. The culprits need to be brought to book as soon as possible.
“We cannot allow such horrendous murder to dampen the spirit of the enforcement officers,” Teo said in a statement today, adding it is crucial to delivering justice.
“At the same time, the same standard of investigation should apply in the Teoh Beng Hock case. In fact, it should apply in all cases,” she said.
Teo pointed out the courts last September ruled that Teoh’s death had been the result of “unlawful act or acts of person unknown, inclusive of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers involved in the arrest and investigation of the deceased”.
“A year has passed. None of the MACC officers have been identified, found and prosecuted for the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
“The inaction of the police and AG Chambers has rendered the judgment meaningless, thus making a mockery of justice,” said the DAP parliamentarian.
Teoh was found dead at MACC Selangor’s office at Plaza Masalam on July 16, 2009 after an overnight interrogation session.
Last year the courts overturned an earlier open verdict and pointed to MACC officers as having had a hand in the DAP aide’s death.
Morais’ killing ‘inhumane’
Morais was abducted after leaving his home for his office on Friday Sept 4, and was finally confirmed dead when his remains were found in an oil drum yesterday.
Teo said her party DAP extended their deepest condolences to the family of Kevin Morais on his untimely and tragic passing.
“What happened to him is inhumane. We thank and shall always remember Morais for his dedicated service for the nation as a deputy public prosecutor,” she said, adding she was “moved” by the AG’s Chamber’s call to find the perpetrators.
“We demand justice for Morais. We demand justice for Teoh Beng Hock and (murdered Mongolian national) Altantuya Shaariibuu.
“Until and unless the perpetrators are brought to justice, we cannot hold our heads up high and say the rule of law in our country is not undermined.”
PAS: Killing politically motivated?
Meanwhile PAS also expressed shock at the discovery of the body, and expressed its condolences to the family.
PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan said the circumstances of Morais’ killing could be described as “gangster-like, is of high profile and involves public interest”.
“We trust the authorities to drag the perpetrator to face justice immediately,” he said in a separate statement.
Nasrudin urged the authorities to view seriously the victim’s brother Richard Morais’ allegations that the killing was linked to a case Morais had been involved in recently.
He added such cases involving prominent individuals and important institutions have been piling up, including Teoh’s as well as that of customs officer Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad and AmBank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi .
“Almost all of these past cases point to issues of politics,” said Nasrudin.
