PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said his party will not cooperate with a party that has betrayed Islam, as they are “traitors” and “worse than enemies”.

Hadi in video clip posted on PAS’ Facebook yesterday was likely referring to Parti Amanah Negara, although he did not mention names.

"That party that has been set up is a party that has betrayed the struggle.

"People who betray the struggle have no choice whether to return or be eliminated, he repents.

"This is how the Islamic struggle works, it is impossible for us to be with one who has a record of betraying the struggle,” he said.

He was speaking at a question and answer session at Machang, Rusila in Terengganu on Sept 3.

The video was recirculated by PAS information director Ahmad Amzad Hashim, who said, “We cannot possibly trust traitors.”

This is likely to be a response to calls for the opposition to sit together to discuss a new coalition.

Amanah: United opposition needed

Yesterday Opposition Leader Wan Azizah Wan Ismail invited PAS and the other main opposition party leaders to a roundtable discussion next Tuesday on the formation of a new opposition coalition.

PKR has indicated a willingness to include PAS in the new coalition after the Pakatan Rakyat coalition ended with PAS’ decision at its muktamar to cut ties with DAP.

Following the muktamar, PAS’ progressive leaders, who were decimated at the party’s top leadership polls, decided to form their own party Amanah.

Amanah today welcomed Wan Azizah’s initiative saying opposition parties needed to stay united in order to take down BN at the next general election.

“To face BN, all other political parties cannot stand alone, because BN fully controls all the government machinery, media and so on.

“Only by uniting the people through a coalition of parties is the best way to effect change, just like what Pakatan Rakyat achieved in the 13th general election,” said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu in a statement today.

He said Amanah is committed to attending the upcoming round table discussion.
