Police will question Dr M 'if necessary'
The police will question former priem minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his involvement in the Bersih 4 rally, if it is necessary, deputy inspector-general of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said today.
Noor Rashid said while he does not know the progress of the investigation, procedures dictate that the police would first record the statements of witnesses based on the police reports lodged, before moving onto other persons.
“If there is a necessity, definitely. We will take the necessary action. What I need to explain here is that all cases related to assemblies – whether Bersih or the red shirts – we give it priority in investigations. So it is a matter of time,” he told reporters at a press conference this morning.
Asked whether this meant that there is a need to call Mahathir for questioning, Noor Rashid ( photo ) replied: “Not yet, so far.”
Mahathir made two appearances at the Bersih 4 rally, on Aug 29 and Aug 30, and made statements critical of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during his second appearance outside Pasar Seni.
Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar announced on Sept 3 that Mahathir would be investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation for his remarks.
“We will call him (Mahathir). He has made speeches and accusations. Among them he claimed Umno leaders had taken bribes, so we want to find out more,” Khalid said at another press conference a day prior, when he first announced that Mahathr would be investigated.
