1MDB to PAC No 2: Tell Jr not to piggyback on unfounded claims
In a sarcastic swipe, 1MDB has urged Public Accounts Committee (PAC) deputy chairperson Dr Tan Seng Giaw to advise DAP lawmaker and PAC member Tony Pua to refrain from issuing statements on unproven allegations.
The investment fund was responding to Tan’s comment in brushing off a call to the authorities to investigate PAC members.
"Give me evidence, you can't say things based on hearsay. What's the evidence? Give it to me. If you can't produce evidence, you shouldn't say such things," the DAP Kepong MP had said.
Lauding this stand, 1MDB said Tan should also put this across to Pua, who is the investment fund's fiercest critic.
"1MDB welcomes this profound advice of the eight-term MP for Kepong as timely and wise, to seek proof before making accusations and to uphold the rule of law, that one is innocent until proven guilty.
"We trust Tan will prescribe the same advice to his junior, Pua, who, true to form, has issued another unproven allegation on 1MDB," the firm said in a statement today.
Riding piggyback on unproven allegations
Pua reportedly asked for Deloitte Malaysia to act responsibly and lodge a police report if it has been misled, in light of recent revelations by US financial daily The Wall Street Journal following discrepancies in payments from 1MDB to International Petroleum Investment Corporation (IPIC) as something which cannot be ignored by the audit firm.
1MDB alleged that Pua's claim to fame is recycling unproven allegations against 1MDB.
It added that the DAP lawmaker waits for an unproven and sensationalist allegation to be made, then piggybacks on this allegation by repeating the same questions.
"When answers are given and facts shared, Pua is proven wrong. However, he then ignores the facts, changes the topic and waits quietly for the next sensationalist and unproven allegation," it said.
Therefore, 1MDB hoped Tan would do the right thing which Pua refuses to do, that is demand a full and transparent inquiry on how confidential PAC documents landed on the lap of a foreign publication.
