UIA to do research to help elevate Orang Asli community

Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA) will carry out a special research in its effort to develop the Orang Asli community around Gombak, said its president Rais Yatim.

He said volunteers, UIA students and lecturers in fields such as sociology, economics, culture and civilisation would participate in the research.

"We will set up a sub-committee to conduct a study on community development and conservation involving about 230 Orang Asli houses in Gombak and devise a fund for the implementation of this research," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after making a goodwill visit and launching launching UIA's "Anak Angkat" (Adoption) programme in conjunction with the university's "Akar Budi" initiative in Kampung Orang Asli Batu 12, Jalan Gombak, today.

Also present were IIUM Rector, Professor Zaleha Kamaruddin and Gombak Orang Asli community leader, Tok Batin Ulang Sipang.

According to Rais, who is also the advisor to the Government on Socio-Cultural matters, the research results will be forwarded to the government in order to upgrade the living standards and economic development of the Orang Asli community.

He said besides providing guidance on socio-cultural aspects, the community will be guided through education and exposure to relevant skills to improve their economic status.

"The Orang Asli community in Gombak is among the pluralistic society, so we want this village that has been adopted under the IIUM volunteer programme to be developed but at the same time the community must maintain their cultural heritage," he said.

The Orang Asli community in Gombak comprise indigenous tribes from several clans among them the Temuan, Semelai, Jakun, Senoi, Jahai, and Bateq.
