Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia has been told to walk the talk on his promised parliamentary reform efforts when the House begins its budget session next week.

Pandikar was also reminded in a statement today of his previous lament that Parliament was merely playing a "rubber stamp" role and his threat to resign as speaker.

The call was made by PKR strategy director , who said past efforts for parliamentary reform, such as the one in 2012, fizzled out but he expected something different this time as Pandikar appeared to be on board and is backed by the government.

"It is time for the government to fulfil its promises to the speaker that it will improve the authority and independence of the parliamentary institution," Sim ( photo ) said.

In May, a frustrated Pandikar was reported to have handed in his resignation as Dewan Rakyat speaker but was asked by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to hold back, with Najib promising to look into the necessary parliamentary reforms. Pandikar later denied quitting .

Sim said PKR fully backed Pandikar's efforts to press ahead for parliamentary reforms in the coming sitting, which will begin on Oct 19.

He said among the reforms Pandikar had asked for was the removal of post of minister in charge of parliamentary affairs, the restoration of the Parliamentary Services Act 1963, the setting up of a permanent parliamentary committee, improving infrastructure and having a prime minister's Question Time session.

"As all quarters appear to support these parliamentary reforms, PKR demands that the government and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (in charge of parliamentary affairs) Azalina Othman table the reforms in Parliament in the coming sitting for approval," Sim said.
