Between Zeti and Abdul Rahman, who’d you believe?

YOURSAY | ‘She has more credibility than the entire cabinet and the AG combined.’

Umno minister targets Zeti for painting 1MDB as guilty

Multi Racial: In most countries, if they have a leader involved in a scandal, their party will force him or her out. Even if the party doesn’t, the cabinet ministers will do that. And if the cabinet won't, the parliament will kick the leader out.

In Malaysia, the cabinet ministers go all out instead to protect the leader as if they were also involved in the scandal. Maybe they did.

Abdul Rahman Dahlan is a cabinet minister. He has no business defending a business entity. It is for 1MDB board members or management to be answerable to Bank Negara. Why is he responding to Bank Negara’s action?

Instead shouldn't he be defending Bank Negara? Shouldn't he be defending the nation?

Malaysians should judge themselves the kind of leadership and government we have. It is not to late for all Malaysians to stand up against corruption and abuse. Vote these people out in GE14.

Res Ipsa: Abdul Rahman, the saying that a little knowledge is sometimes dangerous certainly holds true in your case.

Please note that the approvals given by Bank Negara between 2009 and 2011 for the movement of funds abroad totaling US$1.83 billion were conditional upon 1MDB utilising the funds for specific purposes.

When it became abundantly clear that 1MDB did not adhere to the terms of the approvals given, the central bank conducted its own investigations on the money flow.

Thereafter, the issues of embezzlement and money laundering would have surfaced and Bank Negara then referred the matter to the AG expecting prosecution of the guilty parties.

The action of the AG to kill the matter gives the impression that certain privileged people are being protected.

Bank Negara is now being questioned by the AG as to why they gave the approvals in the first place when there was incomplete or inaccurate information. Have they all forgotten that this is a sovereign fund backed by the government?

Quigonbond: The Bank Negara governor says 1MDB has breached the law, and mind you this is her area of expertise, and she has a lot more credibility than the entire cabinet and the attorney-general (AG) combined.

If you really want to convince Malaysians that Bank Negara is wrong, please produce Bank Negara's report to the AG so that Malaysians can judge for themselves.

I'm betting you won't because it'll be clear where culpability lies once we look at the report. So there you go. Your credibility is 0. Her credibility is solid.

Ferdtan: Who is Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman to contradict Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz when she said that 1MBD had violated the Exchange Control Act 1953?

Abdul Rahman knows nuts about the financial workings of the banking system. Is he better than Zeti? Does he know the Exchange Control Act?

He is hiding behind the rebuttal of Najib’s newly appointed AG Mohamed Apandi Ali. And we all know why Apandi was hastily appointed after the sacking of Abdul Gani Patail who was allegedly about to charge PM Najib Razak for a criminal offence.

Do we have any doubt about the partiality of the newly-minted AG? Your guess is just as good as any.

This small gesture by central bank governor managed to salvage a little of her reputation.

We also hope that the ‘retired’ Abdul Gani will come out soon with explosive revelations regarding the 1MBD scandal and as well as the billion ringgit ‘donation’ to Najib.

Gaji Buta: To some extent, I have to agree with the minister since even I am having a hard time figuring out what laws 1MDB actually broke from the statements made so far.

Per Sun Tzu - if you attack your enemy, you must ensure he is destroyed completely so that there is no chance for him to retaliate in future.

Sali Tambap: Abdul Rahman did not realise that the AG is the PM's appointee. The PM is the suspect here and therefore an interested party. His privilege (of appointing appointee) is also his liability.

In this case, it works against him (and 1MDB), because there is an obviously a conflict of interest for his appointee to decide against the 1MDB. Even if he does not, the perception is that he would not go against his boss, the one who hand-picked and appointed him.

So it can work both ways - the PM sacked the former AG arbitrarily and appointed one of his own but by the same token, the appointed one loses much of his credibility, especially if he is to decide against the personal interest of his boss.

Thus Abdul Rahman's opinion holds no credibility either here.

Unafraid: Bank Negara's stand is based on facts and country’s financial regulations. Based on his past track record, the minister's integrity is questionable.

The central bank governor's integrity is impeccable. She is held in high regard locally and internationally.

Who do you think is telling the truth about 1MDB?

Odin Tajué: With his implication that Zeti didn't know what the Exchange Control Act is all about and thus has falsely incriminated 1MDB as well as his toadying up to a former judge appointed by Najib to cover his (Najib's) voluminous rear end, the BN's tragic ‘miscommunication’ director has again strategically positioned himself as another one of Najib's most ardent, indispensable loyal lubbers.

His servile disposition is perfectly understandable - when the strategic debts fund is finally proved beyond any reasonable doubt to be nothing more than an elaborate grand scam to milk Malaysians dry and the master conman is despatched to the clink, he will have to return to Sabah and be a nobody pushing a pen from nine to five.
