Political cartoonist Zunar will be holding an exhibition of his work at the British Cartoon Museum in London beginning Nov 3 and lasting several months.

"Although I have had several exhibitions abroad in the past, including in Bilbao, Kentucky, Florence, and London itself, this will be my very first exhibition held in a cartoon museum.

"To have my cartoons exhibited in a cartoon museum at a time when I am facing pressure from the (Malaysian) government for my works is genuine encouragement, a tribute I humbly acknowledge and am tremendously grateful for," said Zunar, who is facing nine charges under the Sedition Act and potentially up to 43 years in prison.

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, has seen seven of his books and cartoon artworks banned by the Malaysian government.

Aside from the exhibition, Zunar will also highlight his cause by speaking at ‘The Art of Fighting Through Cartoons’ at the University of Cambridge on Nov 26.

"In addition to the primary session, I will be presenting a slideshow on my cartoons and also showcase live drawing afterwards," he said in a statement.

Prior to that, on Oct 29, Zunar will participate at a forum at Amnesty International UK’s Human Rights Action Centre in London, along with British Award-winning cartoonist Martin Rowson.

Truth about freedom

On Oct 31, he will also be speaking on ‘Cartoon-O-Phobia: Freedom Through Activism’ at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London.

"I will also host a Q&A session on the state of politics and freedom of expression to Malaysians in Zurich on Oct 25," he said.

Zunar's ‘Cartoon-O-Phobia London Tour’ is organised by Suaram International, Global Net, Amnesty UK, Southeast Asian Arts Festival, and Index on Censorship.

"I hope this exhibition and tour will create awareness on the real state of affairs and the serious limitations that exist in Malaysia, where freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and human rights are concerned," said Zunar.
