Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli says members of the public will pay an extra RM13 billion in taxes next year.

This will be collected through the goods and services tax (GST), excise duties, individual tax and even corporate tax, Rafizi said.

"Many people think corporate tax doesn't affect the public, but most of those paying corporate tax are small- and medium-scale business owners.

"These are the usual people, the people who run sundry shops and the like," he said at a press conference in the Parliament lobby today.

Rafizi also highlighted the contrast between GST and the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M).

The government, he said, would be collecting RM19 in GST from each household each day, while their BR1M payouts have only gone up by 14 sen per day.

Gov't using people to recover lost oil revenue

The PKR lawmaker said the government is using the people to recover RM30 billion in lost revenue due to falling oil prices.

Under Budget 2016, personal tax for those earning more than RM600,000 a year has increased.

However there are more tax breaks for the middle-income group, and nn change to corporate tax was announced.

There was also no change to the GST rate either, but the government expects to see an increase in revenue, from RM34.5 billion this year to RM39 billion next year.
