DAP: PAC secrecy oath a gag on 1MDB scandal

DAP has rejected a proposal to have Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members take an oath of secrecy to ensure that the committee's proceeding and investigations are not leaked.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said instead, the PAC hearings should be made public.

"(DAP) strongly opposes the proposed oath of secrecy of the PAC members as an attempt to stifle public discussion of financial scandals, especially in regard to investigations into the RM42 billion 1MDB scandal.

“We urge PAC hearings to be made public as in the generally accepted practice in Commonwealth countries," he said in a statement today.

This decision was arrived at a DAP central executive committee meeting, Lim added.

Last Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed a secrecy oath for the PAC and this was subsequently supported by the committee's new chairperson Hasan Arifin (photo) .

The proposal appeared to be directed at vocal PAC member Tony Pua, who is also DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara.

However, Pua, who had been critical of 1MDB, said he was unfazed by the proposal as he had done nothing wrong.
