DAP: Azalina setting bad precedent with ‘Najib need not answer’

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said has been accused of turning parliamentary control of the executive on its head by saying the prime minister can choose not to answer questions.

DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said she was guilty of this when, on the first day of Parliament, she said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had the 'prerogative' to answer questions on 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation whenever he chooses.

"(Azalina had) committed the ultimate contempt of Parliament by claiming that the prime minister had the right to choose when to answer questions about 1MDB," Lim said in a statement today.

Her action has set a bad precedent, he added, where BN parliamentarians can now claim that they, too, can choose to answer questions directed at them at a later date.

"This is not fulfilling, but evading ministerial responsibility to Parliament. So much for parliamentary reforms!" Lim said.

There has not been a single mention of 1MDB or the RM2.6 billion donation in Parliament since the session started on Oct 19, he said, adding that Najib's administration was being 'too economical with the truth'.

Hence, the opposition was forced to resort to the 'unorthodox but very creative' act of holding up placards reading 'Where's the RM2.6 billion?' after Najib's Budget 2016 speech last Friday, he said.

He also said the concerns of the Malay rulers about 1MDB have fallen on deaf ears.

On Oct 6, the Conference of Rulers released an unprecedented statement saying the 1MDB issue should be resolved as soon as possible and any wrongdoers swiftly punished.

This statement should have been a central issue in Parliament, Lim said.

"How many Umno-BN lawmakers have referred to the Malay rulers' statement during the Budget 2016 debate?" he asked.

So far, no BN parliamentarian have reportedly raised the matter in the House.
