EAIC 'murder' finding – Yong backs call for IGP to answer

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar should take responsibility for deaths in custody for which the police are involved, Gerakan deputy youth chief Andy Yong said today.

This is especially so for cases where the police had indeed tried to tamper with evidence as alleged, he added.

“Such an occurrence is not something new. Though there are good police officers, it is not wrong to say that the general public's perception is that police often abuse their power and are the most corrupted officials in this country.

“Hence, it is high time for the country to tackle such destructive practices by the force once and for all in order for the country to move forward,” he said in a statement.

Yong was responding to Puchong MP Gobind Deo Singh’s call for Khalid earlier to resign after the Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) found that a man who died in a police lock-up last year had been beaten to death by policemen

The commission ruled that Syed Mohd Azlan Syed Mohamed Nur, 25, had been ‘ murdered ’ in the Sungai Rengit police station lock-up on Nov 3 last year and there was evidence that police personnel had cleared the scene before medical officers arrived to check on the deceased.

Yong said that there should be a separation between the police and the government with oversight from both within and outside the police force to ensure its autonomy and professionalism.

'Reconsider IPCMC'

He also suggestedthat the formation of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) be reconsidered.

“If they really want to be transparent and clean, I see no difficulty in forming such a body.

“Same goes for the MACC. An independent MACC appointed by and accountable to the rakyat will be very ideal,” he said.

The IPCMC was mooted following a royal commission of inquiry on the police force but the idea was vehemently opposed by the police after the EAIC was formed as a substitute.
