PARLIAMENT Putrajaya has detected alleged efforts to topple the government, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi claims.

Zahid alluded that the authorities have obtained proof of the plot, the details of which cannot be revealed.

"However, the evidence of such activities cannot be revealed due to security reasons, and the police are still collecting detailed information related to the matter," he said without pointing to any party.

"The government views seriously any effort to topple the legitimate government chosen by the people by undemocratic means," Zahid said.

According to him, such acts would impact the nation's economy.

He said this in reply to a written question from Nasrudin Hassan (PAS-Temerloh), which was released in Parliament.

Proof of plot sought

Nasrudin asked Zahid to state the proof of the existence of the claimed plot to topple the government.

Bersih 4, the massive rally organised to demand Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down in the wake of the 1MDB fiasco and RM2.6 billion donation which went into his personal bank accounts, was described by Najib himself as attempt to topple the government.

Zahid, who is also Umno vice-president, had said there were efforts to topple Putrajaya by an Umno leader and opposition lawmakers.

However, he said, the leader had repented and had gone to meet Najib himself.

Speculation has been rife that Umno deputy president Muhyiddn Yassin was behind the move to lead 18 BN lawmakers to topple the government. Some of the MPs who were named have denied this allegation.

Former Umno Batu Kawan deputy chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan and his lawyer Matthias Chang were arrested and later charged with sabotaging the country’s financial system.
