Pahang MB admits logging in landslide area but says not the cause

Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob does not deny that there are logging activities taking place near Km52.4 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway where a landslide occurred yesterday.

However, he rapped certain quarters, including the media, for spreading false information that the landslide occurred as a result of uncontrolled logging activities in Bukit Tinggi and Janda Baik.

"I do not deny that there are some logging activities taking place there, but it is quite far, or maybe about 1.2km from the scene.

"The logging activity is not for anybody's greed, it is to facilitate the Tenaga Nasional Berhad's cable supply project, but it has been suspended for four months now due to protest from local residents."

The menteri besar said this after attending the meeting of the implementation and coordination committee on east coast economic region by the committee’s development council in Kuantan today.

Also present were state secretary Muhammad Safian Ismail and the council’s chief executive officer Jebasingam Issace John.

The landslide near Lentang-Bukit Tinggi yesterday had caused a mud flood of nearly 500 metres along the route.

Three private vehicles and a transporting lorry were caught in the landslide but no casualty was reported.
