Khairy Jamaluddin said as a minister, he makes sure he does not make "senseless" comments that can be insensitive to the challenges faced by youths.

Without naming names, the youth and sports minister gave an example of what would constitute a "senseless remark" from a minister.

"As a minister, I am always careful. I do not want to say things like: 'If you are not satisfied with your current salary, go open a night market stall'.

"Then that night, KJ (Khairy Jamaluddin) will get bashed (on the social media), for a week.

"We want to avoid such senseless comments, responses that are very insensitive towards young people," Khairy said to cheers at the closing of the Ringgit Management Symposium in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said the people viewed such comments as "convenient", coming from a minister, but such comments are detached from the everyday challenges faced by the youth.

Earlier this month, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan earned flak after he told road users to wake up early and use alternative roads if they wanted to avoid the higher toll charges.

This was after toll fares across Klang Valley went up by as much as 100 percent on Oct 15.

In April, then Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan was also roasted on social media for telling people to cook their own meal to deal with the implementation of the goods and services tax.

Ahmad Maslan is now deputy international trade and industry minister.
