Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin will not be able to address Umno wings at their general assemblies next month.

Umno will break tradition to allow the Umno Wanita, Youth and Puteri chiefs to officiate at the assemblies themselves, Umno president Najib Abdul Razak said.

“This is a suggestion from the wings. This is what they wanted and so we respect their wish," he said.

By convention, the Umno deputy president officiate at the respective wings’ general assemblies.

This year's Umno general assembly will be held from Dec 8 to Dec 12.

Najib said the decision was made in order to have a "positive atmosphere" during the assemblies.

"We hope that this year's general assembly will be conducted well and in a positive atmosphere."

Muhyiddin and Shafie were dropped from Najib's cabinet in July following their open criticisms over state invesment firm 1MDB.

Najib is facing growing pressure from Umno grassroots, with more branches calling for him to resign.

The Umno supreme council meeting today was also held amid mounting speculations that Muhyiddin and Shafie will be sacked from the party.

However, the duo survived while Najib announced the sacking of Gopeng Wanita Umno chief Hamidah Osman on disciplinary grounds.
