PM, we're not in midst of armed insurrection
YOURSAY | ‘Why such momentous legislation be given only two days to deliberate?’
'New security council bill will only empower PM'
Kim Quek:
Are we fighting a war against a foreign aggressor? Are we in the midst of an armed insurrection?
If not, then why are we giving the prime minister such dictatorial powers as if the country needs to be run under martial law?
And why is such a momentous legislation that turns the country from civilian to semi-military rule be given only two days to deliberate and rushed through to become law?
Is PM Najib Abdul Razak doing this for his personal political survival? If not, how else can he justify such emergency measures to rush through the National Security Council bill as if the country is fighting a war that threatens its very survival?
All Malaysians must unite to vehemently reject such a dishonourable attempt to sacrifice our sacrosanct liberties.
Mojo Jojo: I love the part where legal immunity is given to those who commit "errors" on duty.
With such provisions in place, it wouldn't surprise me that such "errors" would be the norm rather than exception, and could extend to such "mistakes" as the permanent or temporary removal of those opposing government action.
In any case, this whole security council business isn't something new: Najib is just taking a leaf out of former premier Abdul Razak Hussein's book and rebranding Razak's National Operations Council into a so-called modern entity.
Gaji Buta: This can't be IS-related, as I doubt they operate by 'areas'. Also, the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) is there to combat terrorist acts. I wonder what this is for.
Hplooi: This bill will seriously impede natural justice, which in turn will put excessive power in the hands of a small group of power elite.
The repercussion from this bill is dangerous and long term. MPs, particularly those in BN, should look into their conscience, and opposition MPs should campaign vigorously for such a bill (in any form, watered down or otherwise) to be rejected.
This bill also looks like Najib laying down the groundwork in case of future criminal proceedings against him.
6th Generation Immigrant: This is not a security-related bill. This is an election-related bill to keep the current government in power, even if election results decide otherwise.
If this is an Umno-sponsored bill, then it is a shame and insult to all other BN coalition parties as you are also not safe.
Kingfisher: Obviously the Bar Council and others interested must ensure that the proposed legislation does not infringe on basic human rights and reasonable legitimacy for good governance.
It especially should not confer arbitrary and dictatorial powers to any one individual, group or for that matter, a government in power.
Tailek: This is way too much power concentrated in the PM and the council. I hope BN parliamentarians will not blindly support this bill. Don't forget one day it may be used against you.
NSC bill - gov’t unleashing monster on people, says Ambiga
Pemerhati: Former Bar Council chief S Ambiga said that “the bill will replace the power of the king to declare an emergency under Article 150 of the federal constitution.”
It looks like that Najib is really worried that he might lose the next elections and if that happens he wants to make sure that he can stay in power by declaring a state of emergency.
Najib knows that he and others close to him could end up in jail for the many crimes they have committed and thus he will do anything to stay out of jail.
If he does not get this bill passed, then he is worried that if BN loses the next elections, the king may not agree to declare a state of emergency and thus he may be forced to give up power and then probably end up in jail.
Just a Malaysian: The country is going mad just to protect one person.
SKT10: The previous NSC was set up by Najib’s father in the wake of the May 13, 1969 incident. What good reasons are there for this new ‘National Security Council Bill 2015’?
Does the Umno-BN government anticipate an attack on our country by any of our neighbouring countries to justify the setting up of such a council?
Or is the setting up of this high-powered NSC mechanism is to overcome all opposition so that the BN government can stay in power for the next 100 years?
Before the NSC Bill 2015 is allowed to be introduced, the government must explain clearly to all citizens the rationale for such a draconian law, after which a national referendum must be held to find out whether the majority of the citizens want to place Malaysia under a dictatorship.
Odin Tajué: Najib has unwittingly showed his hand at the Umno AGM last Thursday by showing slides of the May 13 riots. He won't step down as PM, and he knows Umno will do badly at the GE14 - worse than it did at GE13 - because of that.
But he must continue to hold that position because there are too many serious misdemeanours that would destroy him completely if they were allowed to be investigated properly.
He cannot let that happen. I suspect he has planned to create mayhem to justify declaring of an emergency as soon as the GE14 results become known. That's why he has come up with the NSC Bill.
Tikusmati: When Bersih 5 comes, Kuala Lumpur will be declared a security area under this new law.
