MACC panel wants committee to look at high profile cases before AG

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC Act) special panel urges the formation a special independent panel on high profile cases.

The panel - one of five independent MACC oversight panels - wants a separate committee to look through the high profile cases before they are handed over to the attorney-general.

The recommendation comes following speculation that former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was removed from office for allegedly drafting a charge sheet against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

The charge was related to an ongoing MACC investigation involving Najib, but Gani's successor denied the existence of the draft charge sheet.

In a statement today, the MACC special panel also expressed disappointment that its earlier calls to strengthen the law has thus far been ignored.

The panel said MACC made recommendations to amend two sections of the MACC Act which deal with abuse of power and public officials living beyond their means.

However, three years on, amendments to the law have yet to be tabled by the government in the Dewan Rakyat.

"The prime minister himself gave his in-principle support for the recommendations.

"Therefore, we hope that all involved will give the proposal serious recommendation so we can realise our plans this year," the panel said.

It also calls for a separate services commission under the federal constitution, so it can hire and fire on its own terms.

The special panel also wants the government to bump up the RM42 million allocated under Budget 2016.
