Non-Muslim journalists were barred from covering the launch of a new Puteri Umno unit aimed at promoting Islam to the younger generation.

Dubbed Daulatkan Islam Agama Negara (Dian), it was launched today by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the Putra World Trade Centre.

The squad was set up following the perception of a split within the Muslim community read a brochure disseminated to Puteri members.

However non-Muslim journalists were barred from entering the venue for the event.

"Only Muslims can enter. I don't know why. I just follow instructions, " said a member of the Malaysian Volunteer Force (Rela) who was on duty at the entrance of the event.

When asked for the reason, an official who refused to reveal his name said it was the organiser's right to decide who could enter the venue. "Please respect that," said a man who refused to reveal his name.

"There is no specific reason (why non-Muslim journalists were barred). It's not just Malaysiakini ,"he added.

"We want Muslims to cover this event because they have a better understanding compared to Non-Muslims who have a different understanding of the matter," he said.

The squad would also promote awareness on threats relate to secularism, pluralism and liberalism, according to the brochure.

It would also instill in the community the obligation to develop the religion in the country.

Its members also should be sensitive to the influences that would erode the value of the religion. The squad is open to female Muslims aged 16 to 35.

It also aims to become an icon for female Muslims in the world. The unit will also be mobilised when it considers Muslims are under threat.
