The retired civil servants group, G25, has been urged to cease promoting their free association and basic human rights concept.
Abdullah Muhammad Zin who is the Prime Minister's Religious Adviser, said the group appeared to have adopted an extreme liberal stand on a number of issues that were inconsistent with Islam.
"Some of the members in G25 might have lived abroad before, which is why they want to establish the western concept of free association and human rights struggle here.
"If they continue to promote the concept to the extent of threatening Muslim unity, the mufti might have to issue a decree," he told reporters outside the venue of the Umno general assembly 2015 in Kuala Lumpur today.
The G25, whose members are Malay, had allegedly issued a statement urging punishment against khalwat (close proximity) to be abolished if it is committed in a private dwelling.
The group allegedly said that khalwat if committed in a private dwelling was a personal sin between the doer and Allah.
Abdullah who is also the chairperson of Institut Wasatiyah Malaysia said the group was hiding behind the concept of wasatiyah or moderation while practising pluralism and other ideologies that go against the teachings of Islam.
He said the group had not understood the real meaning of wasatiyah which advocates balance in every aspect of life.
He said G25 should not confuse the people on the concept of wasatiyah, which is encouraged in Islam.
