Flood situation in Malacca and Johor improves

The flood situation in Malacca and Johor improved with two evacuation centres in Malacca being closed yesterday and today.

In Malacca, the evacuation centre at the Bukit Balai Community Hall was closed at 7am today while the Kampung Panchor Community Hall was closed at 5pm yesterday.

A statement from the Malacca Civil Defence Department today said the number of victims in the state continued to decline to 169 as at 7am today, compared with 211 victims at 8pm last night.

In Johor, 59 victims from eight families from two villages were still staying at the Ledang evacuation centre as at 8am today.

Ledang District Civil Defence Officer, Staf Muda (PA) Mohd Shahrizan Ab Aziz said the victims from Parit Ponorogo and Tanjung Gading were being accommodated at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit Bunga as a result of a heavy downpour at 2pm for the past two days.

He added that the evacuation centre would be closed after lunch due to the good weather today.

In Ipoh, however, the Perak State Disaster Management Committee Secretary, Kolonel (PA) Mohd Noor Hassan Ashari said the number of flood victims continued to rise to 80 people from 19 families as at 8am today compared with 62 victims from 15 families last night.

He said the number of victims in Kampung Padang Serai, Batu Hampar, Beruas rose to 38 from nine families compared with 20 victims from five families last night.

"All the victims were given shelter at the Sekolah Agama Rakyat Radhuaniah," he said when contacted today.

Meanwhile in Kampung Lorong Mesra in Changkat Jong, Teluk Intan, the number of victims remained at 42 from 10 families.

"The victims were all sheltered at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Jong," he said.
