Reveal donors for RM10m arch facelift, Umno rep tells MB

Amid the raging controversy and confusion over the RM2.6 billion transferred into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal accounts, the opposition is facing a donation imbroglio of their own.

This is over the RM9.8 million to upgrade the Kota Darul Ehsan arch which stands along the Federal Highway, and marks the border between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Umno assemblyperson Mohd Sharif has demanded Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to answer two important questions regarding the cost.

Firstly, the Dengkil elected representative said Azmin must disclose the reason for the colossal sum incurred, which he argued was unrealistic and illogical.

Secondly, he zeroed in on the donors, who are said to be funding the project.

"If it is true there are donors, then reveal (the identity)... I am puzzled why the issue of donors footing the bill suddenly arose.

"The state government must explain the immense cost for upgrading works. The people have the right to know," he told Umno Online .

Yesterday, Taman Medan state assemblyperson Haniza Talha claimed the facelift to the arch was being financed by public donations.

"The arch is commissioned by the Sultan of Selangor and its cost borne by the public through donations.

"All donors' names will be displayed at the site. Presently, the Selangor state government is merely advancing payments which will be paid back by the donors. This is so that the upgrading works get started," said the PKR Wanita deputy chief.

Haniza also said the project was approved by former menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim, and awarded to the lowest bidder by open tender.

Meanwhile, Sharif said if the state government is confident there are no leakages, then it should not be concerned about answering the questions raised by Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) leader Badrul Hisham Shahrin, who is better known as CheguBard.

"Responding that the cost has been approved by the state assembly is not a good answer, because no details were revealed. It is not an issue if the sum is small, but this is a huge amount.

"I hope the state government won't blame Umno for this as it has nothing to do with Umno. We just want to know (the facts)," he quipped.

Previously, Badrul Hisham said the current administration should have put the funds to better use for the people.

On Sunday, the arch made headlines after a businessman, who was also described as a former underworld figure, hanged himself from the scaffolding.
