The government will table the proposal to amend the Dewan Rakyat Standing Orders, which will include the setting up of a special chamber, at the next cabinet meeting.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman Said, who is in charge of Parliament, said among the main changes proposed were those related to verbal question and answer, proposal to have ministers' question time and the establishment of new select committees.

The decision to get cabinet approval on the amendments was made at a cabinet committee meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also BN chief whip, last Thursday.

Azalina said besides her, the meeting was also attended by cabinet committee members, namely Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam, Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Wee Ka Siong, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Communication and Multimedia Minister MohdSalleh Said Keruak.

"The committee was set up following the tabling of the proposed amendment for the first time at a cabinet meeting on Dec 4, 2015.

"Once decided by the cabinet, these amendments will be referred back to the speaker of the Dewan Rakyat to be finalised at the Dewan Rakyat sitting," she said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur.

"At the cabinet committee meeting, the proposed amendments were fine-tuned and unanimously agreed upon except for the amendment on the setting up of new select committees, which has been put on hold for further in-depth and comparative study," she added.
