Fomca hopes no cuts for development under revamped budget

The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) hopes that any adjustments under the recalibrated Budget 2016, to be tabled at the Dewan Rakyat on Jan 28, only involve costs at the management level.

Its deputy president Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman said although the adjustments were necessary, the government should retain the development expenditure specified under the original budget as the people's well-being should be accorded priority.

“If it (adjustment) involves the development aspect, it will have an impact on the people, especially if it involves facilities and amenities for the rakyat,” he told Bernama today.

Mohd Yusof said any adjustment should only involve developments that could be postponed so that the government could focus its efforts on revitalising the economy.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had recently announced that Budget 2016 would be “recalibrated’ to reflect the current economic climate.

He said several aspects of Budget 2016 which required recalibration would be changed in order to make the budget more realistic and accurate, in line with the situation the government would be facing in 2016.

Mohd Yusof said the adjustments were necessary due to the falling crude oil prices, which has led to a decline.
