Two South Korean tourists caused a minor bomb scare at Bukit Bintang today, after leaving their bags behind while shopping at the Pavilion mall in Bukit Bintang.
The incident came after Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor warned that the Islamic State militant group was targeting the shopping hub of Bukit Bintang, among other locations.
Dang Wangi district police chief Zainol Samah said the the bomb squad was called in after the mall's security personnel alerted police of two sling bags left under a bench at the mall.
"A check revealed that the bags were filled with clothes. The bags' owners then came to claim it.
"The bags were left behind because they wanted to go shopping," Zainol told reporters in a statement.
He said there was no evacuation ordered and police were satisfied by the tourists' explanation.
Earlier today Tengku Adnan said several hotspots around Kuala Lumpur , namely Bukit Bintang, Bangsar and Hartamas, had been identified as potential terrorist targets.
Police have since denied releasing information on terrorist hotspots.
The scare at Pavilion today is similar to an incident at the Petronas Twin Towers last year.
Last October, four students from a school in Negeri Sembilan had left behind their bags outside Tower Two of Petronas Twin Towers.
When the bomb squad destroyed the bags to deal with potential explosives, it was revealed that they were only filled with clothes.
The students said they had left behind their bags to go shopping and watch a movie at the Suria KLCC Mall, attached to the twin towers.
