The Kelantan branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is hot on the heels of a syndicate suspected to have engaged members of the public as transporters to transport illegal immigrants into the country via the Malaysia-Thai border.

Its director, Abdul Aziz Aban, said from the intelligence gathered, they believed there was a well-organised syndicate involved in transporting illegal immigrants to desired locations in Malaysia.

"These transporters may be recruited by the syndicate to bring in the foreigners," he told reporters in Kota Baru, today.

Abdul Aziz said the hired transporters would transport the illegal immigrants posing as locals and wearing sarong, baju melayu and kopiah to fool the authorities.

He said the MACC had recently nabbed a local man suspected of being hired to ferry six Myanmar nationals, who were later apprehended by security forces.

Abdul Aziz said the man had been charged in court and was awaiting trial for attempting to bribe security forces to release the six Myanmar nationals.

Efforts are being done to track down the man's accomplices, he added.
