Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s proposal to close roads in Kuala Lumpur to allow Mat Rempit to race on them have drawn mixed views, with many expressing concern about the impact on traffic conditions.

Road user Mohd Ismit Iswad pointed out that Sepang already has a racing track and the government would do better to allow Mat Rempit to use the facility there if it wanted legalise illegal racing.

“If they close the roads here, it will surely jam up,” he said in a street interview by KiniTV in Kuala Lumpur.

Another road user, Nur Hartayati Tahir, was similarly worried what the road closures would mean for traffic.

“It will make things difficult for those with cars,” she said.

Nurul Izzati Mohd Razali also expressed similar concerns.

“But if it is like at midnight, then it’s okay,” she said. Nurul Izzati nevertheless added that it would still be best for the Mat Rempit to race at a proper race track rather than the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Road user Danny Tan said Mat Rempit engage in dangerous behaviour and it should not be encouraged.

“I don’t know why a minister in our country would encourage it, perhaps there’s some problem with his brain,” he said.

However, some motorcyclists welcomed the proposal.

“The youths now are rather aggressive, especially over the economy and jobs,” said biker Syamsul Sharifuddin.

“So allow them to let it out... It’s better for them to be able to do it legally rather than illegally.”

Another motorcyclist, Mohd Rafie Mohd Adnan, also thinks the proposal is worth trying.

“It’s the culture of youths to want to race so we should just accept it and guide them in a more professional manner,” he said.

He added that any road closure for racing activities will not be long.

“It’s good if they race legally instead of illegally,” he said.
