You can't even beat Anwar, Muhyiddin told

When Anwar Ibrahim was expelled from the government and Umno in 1998, the nation was plunged into chaos, with tens of thousands taking to the streets in protest.

However, a similar scenario unfolding now involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his former number two Muhyiddin Yassin has failed to ignite such resentment.

Comparing the reactions to both incidents, an article in the pro-Umno website MyKMU.net argued that it showed Muhyiddin lacks the influence which Anwar had possessed.

"Politically, Muhyiddin has been defeated ( tewas ) by Anwar," it stated.

The article stated that if Muhyiddin is unable to even vanquish Anwar on this note, what more Najib and Umno members nationwide.

"Based on (support from) 200-300 branch chiefs among 20,000, and with only two or three Umno division's protesting (his removal), does Muhyiddin think he wields great influence?

"Perhaps Muhyiddin feels that with Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) and his son Mukhriz as well as (former minister) Mohd Shafie Apdal being in his camp, he can force Najib to step down similar to (what transpired with former premier) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi."

As an experienced politician, MyKMU advised the former deputy prime minister to be mature and stop embarrassing himself.

"Learn from the late Ghafar Baba. Did he behave like you," it added.

Citing the example of former PAS number two Mohamad Sabu, the website also pointed out that it is a political tradition in Malaysia that when a deputy president attacks the president, the former's political career becomes short-lived.

MyKMU noted that when Anwar locked horns with Mahathir, all his "wrongdoings and crimes" were unearthed in order to expel him.

"At least that has not been done to Muhyiddin, and talk is that he is no saint either," it said.
