Kejara demerit system to be implemented in May

The Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas), a combination of the Automated Enforcement System (AES) and the Kejara demerit system, is expected to be implemented in May.

Deputy Transport Minister Ab Aziz Kaprawi said to this end, the Road Transport Department Act will be amended in the Parliament session.

"We hope to present it before Parliament in April. Hopefully we can implement Awas by May," he told reporters at Parliament lobby yesterday.

With the implementation of Awas, the ministry proposed that the rate of summons under AES be reduced but subjected to the government's decision.

The installation of AES cameras will be added in stages at accident prone areas on the highways, federal roads and at traffic intersection.

Ab Aziz said under Awas, drivers who committed offences and accumulated 60 demerit points under Kejara will have their driving licence revoked.

The demerit system will start when the driver collected 20 demerit points which comes with a warning, the next 20 demerit points will come with suspension of licence while another 20 demerit points will mean revocation of licence.

"Drivers who speed will get four demerit points, those who do not obey the traffic lights get four demerit points while those who cut double lines also get four demerit points," he said when replying to a supplementary question from Juslie Ajirol (BN-Libaran) in Dewan Rakyat.

Ab Aziz said under Awas, the Road Transport Department will offer a rehabilitation programme to drivers whose licences are suspended.
