PKR Machang Bubok assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon is the latest victim to be probed under the archaic 1948 Sedition Act.

Lee yesterday received a letter from ASP Hassan Mohamad Salih from the criminal investigations bureau, asking him to be present at the Bukit Mertajam police station on March 29, 10am.

When contacted, Lee confirmed receiving the letter, which said he is being called in over section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act, but did not specify the reasons for the probe.

"It's true. I don't have the details, but it may be due to my press statement condemning the police for taking down the #BebasAnwar billboard in Selangor," Lee told Malaysiakini .

In the statement released on March 22, Lee alleged the police was being used as a "tool" by certain quarters.

He had called them “unprofessional” in taking down the billboards in Selangor and made unflattering remarks about the force.

Billboard policing slammed

Lee questioned why the police had deployed so many of their personnel to seize the three billboards, asking, "Are the billboards more threatening than criminals?"

Lee also accused the police of practising double standards in carrying out their enforcement, claiming the force hardly acted with such fervour to complaints regarding gambling dens and other threats to security.

"But billboards which have obtained the approval of the Selangor local council were taken down just like that," Lee, who is also PKR Penang organising secretary, said.

The billboards were seized when an Umno leader Jamal Md Yunos threatened to burn them down, but Lee claimed no action has been taken against him.

Lee also claimed his #bebasAnwar banner in Taman Selamat, Bukit Mertajam, was also seized by police at 3.30am today.

Meanwhile last Sunday inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said they would act against Jamal, and added the billboards should be removed as they were seditious.
