The claim that a Saudi prince gave a gift of US$375 million to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must be verified, Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said.

The Umno supreme council member said the claim, like that of Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah's alleged declaration against Najib, was "too good to be true".

"We don't know whether it's true or not.

"This can be a wild accusation by those who are not happy with Najib," Tajuddin told reporters outside the Parliament lobby today.

Responding to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation , which published a letter from the prince regarding the gift, he said Najib had never before mentioned the US$375 million gift.

Asked if he would raise the matter in the Umno supreme council, the Pasir Salak MP replied in the negative.

"If it's so serious that it becomes an issue, Najib himself will reply, no need for anyone to pressure him."

However, Tajuddin noted that Najib had good relations with the Saudis and that it would not be wrong if they did give him a donation.

The prime minister has denied any wrongdoing in a previous donation scandal involving RM2.6 billion in 2013.

Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has also cleared Najib of any criminal misconduct for receiving the donation.
