Amanah Youth vice-chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin has lodged a police report against news portal www.bicara.news after being arrested under Section 124C of the Penal Code and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act today.

Accompanied by his lawyer Lim Lip Eng, Shazni had turned up at the Dang Wangi police station to provide a statement for reportedly saying BN could only be toppled through large-scale riots. His alleged quotes were published by www.bicara.news .

Shazni had denied the comments featured by www.bicara.news in an article, which he alleged had quoted him entirely differently from his original remarks, as stated in an article published on Free Malaysia Today ( FMT ).

In the report, Shazni had called for a thorough police investigation on the publisher and reporter of www.bicara.news , who were involved in publishing the allegedly slanderous and false article.

“He (Shazni) has been held for 24 hours (starting from 3pm today), but there is a possibility of the (authorities extending the duration of his detention),” said Lim, who is representing the Amanah Youth stalwart.

“Tomorrow morning, I’ll be consulting the investigating officer to see if Shazni will be released upon the expiry of his (current) 24-hour remand, added Lim when contacted by Malaysiakini .

The incident spread like wildfire among the press, when inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar instructed for action to be taken against Shazni.

Meanwhile, the social media arena had been busy with urging for a candlelight vigil at the Dang Wangi Police Station at 8pm tonight - in response to the remands of Shazni and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia's (SMM) former secretary Ahmad Shukri Kamarudin, who was also recently detained by the police for a sedition investigation based on a 2014 police report.

When contacted by Malaysiakini , the Abolish The Sedition Act Movement (Ghah) confirmed the event.

In a related development, Bukit Aman CID chief, Commissioner Mohmad Salleh, in a statement today confirmed that Shazni Munir is being held at the Jinjang police station where tomorrow they are expected to apply for an extension of the 24-hour order.

“Police are investigating him under the Sedition Act and the Section 124C of the Penal Code for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy,” he said.
