BN MPs won't support move against Najib, admits Dr M
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has admitted that a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in Parliament will not succeed.
He said this is because they can't find the necessary 24 BN lawmakers needed to make up the numbers along with opposition elected representatives, to support the motion.
"This attempt failed because even though they realise the premier's guilt, but due to self interest and because of fear that action will be taken as what happened to Muhyiddin Yassin and Shafie Apdal, and fear of other actions by Najib, none dared to sign the declaration to oust the PM.
"That's why a vote of no-confidence can't be done," Mahathir wrote in his blog today.
Opposition leaders had previously revealed that a statutory declaration to support a no confidence vote had been circulated by Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Razaleigh however denied making such an SD.
Because a no-confidence vote isn't feasible, Mahathir said the only hope to get rid of the prime minister is for the people to pressure the Malay rulers.
He said such pressure had previously succeeded in derailing British plans to set up the Malayan Union, leading to the birth of the Federation of Malaya.
"From this event we can conclude that the people's voice has influence," he said, adding that this is why a people's declaration is important.
Mahathir is currently spearheading a Save Malaysia movement to get signatures urging Najib's ouster and the implementation of institutional reforms.
The declaration has been signed by Umno rebels such as Muhyiddin, as well as leaders from the opposition and civil society.
In a counter-move Umno elected representatives loyal to Najib have come out with their own declarations expressing full support for the PM, most notably the Kelantan and Kedah Declarations.
