PARLIAMENT The government has linked the existence of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals among the Muslim community to mental disorder and HIV/Aids.

"The government continuously notes the various deviant behaviour of LGBT that has become a widespread (phenomenon) in the Muslim community," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom in a written reply.

"This is because the lifestyle of LGBT has exposed them to social ills, including HIV/Aids, psychology and mental disorder," he said.

He was responding to Normala Abdul Samad (BN-Pasir Gudang) who asked how the government is tackling the LGBT issue among Muslims.

Jamil said the government via the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and state Islamic affair departments have came out with various measures, including treatment and rehabilitation for the LGBT community.

According to him, several preventive measures are taken, including renewing the declaration that Islam is against LGBT, prepare action plans to curb gender confusion and print brochures.

"(The authority also) charge (them) in court so they will not repeat their behaviour and deter others from emulating them," he added.
