Adenan: Chinese in Sarawak switching support to BN
Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem today said the Chinese community in the state is switching their support to the Barisan Nasional (BN).
Adenan, who is Sarawak BN chairperson said, however, the question that arose now was whether the number would be enough to win the ballots for BN in the coming 11th state election.
“There is a movement back to BN among the Chinese community. The question is not whether there is any... definitely there is but whether that is enough to steal the ballots for BN,” he told reporters after attending the KTS Group staff gathering in Sibu today.
He said BN had to campaign harder in order to secure more ballots from the Chinese to ensure victory.
Asked on how many of the 16 Chinese majority seats would be delivered to BN, the Sarawak chief minister said: “Several... you know what several means. It doesn’t mean a few”.
On when he would announce other potential direct BN candidate from the United People’s Party (UPP), after he had announced the first one, Jerip Susil, who would contest in the Mambong state, Adenan said he would do so when the time comes.
“There must be a fair distribution. One is good but not enough. But I cannot be particular about it (now). The time will come for me to announce it,” he said.
According to him, he would announce the candidates for Dudong, Bawang Assan and Meradong in due time before the nomination day.
On whether the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate offered by the independent Chinese schools would lead to the abolishment of the bumiputera special rights by the state government, he said the government had no intention to do it as it was part of the country’s constitution.
About 8,000 employees from KTS Group of Companies throughout the state attended the gathering including its managing director Henry Lau Lee Kong.
Also present was Sarawak Local Government and Community Development Minister Wong Soon Koh.
