Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chien Jen has challenged Chief Minister Adenan Satem to reveal who are the Umno leaders who have supposedly been barred from entering the state, in addition to the activists and federal opposition leaders.
"I challenge Adenan to disclose the list of his so-called Umno leaders who are banned from entering Sarawak," Chong said in a statement yesterday.
He was commenting on Adenan's statement yesterday that he would also act against some Umno leaders in addition to the opposition leaders deemed "unsavoury" to the state.
"...We will ban some Umno members from coming, but I cannot give you their names now," the chief minister reportedly responded to a question when asked if he will also ban Umno leaders if they pose the same threat to state unity.
Chong said that it was most unfair that while opposition leaders were banned from Sarawak as campaigning for the upcoming state polls heats up, Adenan was allowing Umno leaders, including Prime Minister Najib Abdul Rahman and his deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to enter the state to help BN campaign.
"Though Adenan claimed that he also banned some Umno leaders from entering Sarawak, we all still see Najib and his whole cabinet ministers from Umno coming over to campaign for BN," he said.
Chong said it was regrettable that for all the perceived openness over the last two years, Adenan has revealed himself to be otherwise when the real test came.
The state DAP chief also questioned Adenan's reason for banning opposition leaders and activists from Sarawak, which ranged from religious bigotry and racism to “unsavoury characters”.
"Who will be next on Adenan’s ban list and who determine whether one is unsavoury? Is it based solely on the whims and fancies of Adenan?" he asked.
"In other words, these opposition leaders are unsavoury only during election time, but are savoury at other times.
“Obviously, the true reason for barring opposition leaders is that they are campaigning against the BN," claimed Chong.
He also alleged that Adenan has abused his immigration special powers to safeguard the BN from a legitimate democratic political challenge.
