Senators urge Mahathir to apologise to Najib, the people

Several members of the Dewan Negara have urged former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to apologise to Prime Minister Najib Razak and the people for his allegations concerning the RM2.6 billion donation.

Senator S Nallakaruppan said the issue was settled as Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had confirmed the financial contribution was from the country.

"Kepong MP (PAC vice-chairman Tan Seng Giaw) said Najib was not involved (referring to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report on 1MDB)," he said when debating the motion of thanks on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's speech at the Dewan Negara today.

Nallakaruppan said Mahathir who had retired after governing the country for 22 years, should not interfere in the affairs of the current prime minister.

"Mahathir has resigned from Umno, Petronas and Proton. He should now stay quiet and take care of his grandchildren. There is no need to disturb Najib because Najib is a very patient man. But don't test him (Najib)...(because) he wants to develop the country," he said.

'No more case'

In line with Nallakaruppan's opinion, Senator Megat Zulkarnain Omardin said Mahathir should stop confusing the people.

"There is no more case. What else (does he want)...enough is enough. If there is a personal problem, settle it personally...This game of political persecution brings the greatest harm," he said.

Megat Zulkarnain also requested the former prime minister not to make use of the people to overthrow the current leadership.

Senator Abdullah Mat Yasim urged the authorities such as the home ministry and police to take appropriate action, so that the people were not deceived by misleading claims.

The Dewan Negara session resumes tomorrow.
