Kini Roundup: Copter tragedy, election D-Day and 1MDB woes

Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday.

Deputy minister killed in helicopter tragedy

The helicopter which went missing over Sarawak was found to have crashed near Batang Lupar river.

The remains of deputy minister Noriah Kasnon was recovered but five others, including Kuala Kangsar MP Wan Mohammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad, were unaccounted for.

Despite the tragedy, the Department of Civil Aviation said the helicopter's operator Hornbill Skyways will not be grounded.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek revealed that he was supposed to ride on the helicopter but had switched aircraft after he was invited by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu Numpang to join him at a separate function.

It’s D-day in Sarawak

The Election Commission (EC) said it expected polling results to be announced later than 11pm tonight due to weather conditions.

It has been raining money during the 12-day election campaign with the government announcing at least RM382.8 million in allocations.

An NGO-led election monitoring team said many election offences were committed throughout the campaign period and slammed the EC's inaction.

All contesting parties wrapped up their campaign at midnight yesterday. Voting begins at 8am today and will continue to 5pm.

No let-up in 1MDB woes

Singapore authorities slapped three more charges against a former banker in relation to the 1MDB investigations.

Back in Malaysia, lawyers said the 1MDB directors who resigned should still be probed for possible breach of duties.

They added that at least two new board of directors must be appointed soon as 1MDB would be operating illegally without a functioning board.
